Artist Statement
Time, space and light offer a method to quantify the nature of reality from a scientific perspective. Working artistically with such ephemeral phenomena creates awareness of the limitations of our faculties for knowing and experiencing objective truth. We are challenged to discover what makes up the veil that is our own perception.
To explore this phenomenological dynamic, I use photography and ephemera to evoke nostalgia/ memory, transparent materials to generate space along with digital and time based media to transfigure our internalized temporal modes. The natural laws of time, space and light can be collapsed and expanded with digital media. I also record, depict and create light to illuminate its elusive nature and to offer a visceral experience of awe. Most recently, I’ve become interested in using interactivity within real and virtual spaces. Ideally, this will allow the user to participate in a dialog about perception.

Ela Boyd is a California native. She studied at the Art Institute of Boston, Scuola Lorenzo Di Medici (Art Institute of Florence, Italy) and completed her BFA at California College of Arts in San Francisco. As an Individualized major, she focused on new media sculpture and installation, using blown glass, images (photos and collage), video projection, light, space and sound. She uses light and transparency to address themes of Phenomenology, perception, time and space.  To view more work visit www.elaboyd.com
