9. Proposal at Pastry Rock

Statement: Workers from Donnie’s Ripen Rite perform services on an oversized pair of bananas. Birds swirl about as a competing company travels by hot air balloon to a job nearby. In another painting, a giant pastry becomes a “hang out” for young folks, while an elaborate marriage proposal takes place. I take ordinary objects, remove them from their natural context, and ask “What if?” These are some ideas I pursue in making one of my paintings. As I incorporate seemingly incongruous subjects, a narrative emerges that is sometimes absurd, fantastical, and humorous. My brother once said that these paintings are “so much like Steve.” That is what painting provides me: an opportunity to express my particular view of the world. I've expressed positive imagery in my art and perhaps that’s the way I keep my sanity.

Steve Bartlett was born in West Virginia and grew up in Louisville, KY. He graduated from Kenyon College with a B.A. in Art. His paintings are a combination of imaginary and personal experiences. Prior to painting, Steve sculpted small to large stainless steel works. His art is in the public collections of Neiman Marcus, Continental Airlines, The Port of San Diego, The City of Los Altos, and Adobe Systems, as well as in numerous private collections. He currently lives in Los Angeles.  www.stevebartlett.net
