ARTIST STATEMENT:
I sculpt the paint. I paint the words. I freeze the moment. The palm of my hand, the map of my skin plowing the fine layers of paint, create a unique texture which encapsulates the present moment, juxtaposed against the past and looking to the future. These essentials are my credentials.

Mr. Oroschakoff was born in Sofia, Bulgaria in 1952. His father was also an artist; his mother is an orthopaedic surgeon. Before the Communist revolution in 1944, his grandfather, Haralampi Oroschakoff, was the mayor of Sofia and one of the heads of the Democratic Party. His other grandfather, Vassil Balarev, was a general in the Royal Army. Both of Mr. Oroschakoff’s grandfathers were imprisoned by the Communists.
Surrounded by his father’s paintings, Mr. Oroschakoff began painting at age five. In 1975, Mr. Oroschakoff entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia. During the intensive six-year formal curriculum, he also exhibited throughout Bulgaria as well as at the IVth International Biennale at the Lahti Art Museum in Finland. His graphic works and posters (for film, theatre, and the environment) were distributed throughout Bulgaria.
Mr. Oroschakoff was open in his defiance of the Communist system. As a result, he was denied the right to travel outside of Bulgaria and to be present at his own shows abroad. In 1984, Mr. Oroschakoff crossed three borders to escape Bulgaria, arriving in San Francisco in 1985 with no English, and only five dollars. From 1985 through 1999, Mr. Oroschakoff lived in San Francisco. He became an American citizen in 1990. In 1999, he moved to London, and in 2001, he returned to San Francisco. In 2007, Mr. Oroschakoff moved to the New York area.
Six months after arriving in the United States, Mr. Oroschakoff had his first exhibition in San Francisco and sold every painting. That success allowed him to devote himself full-time to his art. Mr. Oroschakoff exhibited frequently in the U.S. and Europe and his paintings can be found in private collections in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Palm Springs, London, Paris, Cologne, and Sofia. Mr. Oroschakoff has had numerous one-man and group shows, including exhibitions at the Modern Art Museum in Lahti, Finland, the San Bernardino County Museum in Redlands, California, Anshen & Allen in San Francisco, the Portland Gallery in Portland, Oregon, the National ’97 Small Works Exhibition in New York, the Salon International d’Automne, the Salon des Artistes Francais, and the Salon des Beaux Arts in Paris, as well as several exhibitions in Bulgaria both before and after the fall of the Berlin Wall. He is included in, among other catalogues, Quand l’art du XXe siecle etait concu par des inconnus ... L’Histoire du Salon d’Automne, de 1903 a nos jours (Les Editions Arts et Images du Monde, Paris).
In addition to his painting, Mr. Oroschakoff has spent the last ten years writing fiction and in 2004 published his first novel, Epilogogod (Gutenberg Press, Sofia). He then personally translated that work into English, and in addition has recently finished his second novel, S.P., which was written directly in English. His other published works include Egyptian Cat on No Roof (Ah, Maria Anthology of One Unfinished Decade: Bulgarian Classicists from 1990-1999) and Cherry Tree in Trousers (Literary Newspaper, Sofia).
He is currently working on a new series of art works, a collection of short stories and his third novel.
