Loren Kantor is a woodcut artist and writer based in Los Angeles. He carves original relief prints from woodblocks, linoleum, sintra and rubber. He loves old movies and old Los Angeles.
Statement:
I first encountered woodcuts at an L.A. County Museum exhibition in the '80s that featured prints from the post-WWI German Expressionist Movement. I fell in love with the bold, brusque lines and stark imagery. The lines can be simple, but the resulting prints are often subtle and complex. My grandfather was a European refugee who scribed Torahs for a living. One mistake and he had to start over from scratch. Woodcuts are the same way. Once a line is carved, you are stuck with it. Either you start over or you embrace the "mistakes." This forces you to slow down, to concentrate and to relax when carving. The process is meditative; it also gets you off the computer grid. I love the honesty and purity of a woodcut. The final print reveals each minute cut, but it also transcendent. This to me is what art is all about.
