The Art:
Yo, Miss, a graphic novel, is the story of a year at John V. Lindsay Wildcat Academy, a second-chance high school in New York City. I have been a teacher at the school for 16 years. The original idea for the book came about because teachers and students never seem to be heard in the public dialogue about education. The classroom life that I lived daily often did not fit with what pundits, bureaucrats and Silicon Valley entrepreneurs were describing, and too much blame was being put on teachers and too little emphasis on the educational value of anything beyond constant standardized testing. In making this book, I wanted to convey my experience in the trenches of education, as well as capture who my students are. I wanted to portray the reality that I knew — one that includes triumphs, but also failures. Finally, I wanted to give dimension to these kids, who are virtually voiceless in the educational policy debate and in our society in general.

Lisa Wilde is an artist and teacher. She has taught at John V. Lindsay Wildcat Academy, a second-chance high school in New York City, for the past 16 years. Prior to that, she worked for ten years at the BBC TV’s New York office.

The coolest news about Yo, Miss is that it is going to be published, beginning in fall 2013, as sequential zines by the incredible Portland-based Microcosm Publishing. Yo, Miss was also excerpted in the graphic anthology Show & Tell: A Collection of Comics About Teaching and Learning, and pages were featured on the website Edwize.org. Wilde has presented Yo, Miss at numerous workshops, including at Sarah Lawrence/Bank Street, as part of their graduate program for educators. Wilde lives in Brooklyn, NY with her husband. Her son is now away at college.
