ARTIST STATEMENT:

I’m an illustrator, storyteller, and Seinfeld enthusiast residing in Visalia, CA, but I routinely split my time between northern and southern California. I created the Neckless comic series and enjoy making home videos when not doing freelance work.

The process I use most involves a lot of sketching in Photoshop, printing out the sketch, then using a light box to do the finished line work on physical paper with ink and brush. From there, I scan in the drawing in at a high resolution and bring it back into Photoshop where I touch up the lines where necessary and then add color and value. I like to do this in as few layers as possible while utilizing a limited palette of flat color. Overall my process can be meticulous, but it also provides a means of structured exploration.

With my personal illustration and comic work, my main focus is always storytelling. The narratives in my work have much to do with how past experience informs visions of the future and our interpretations of the present; moreover, it’s about how that process influences the present relationships we create, sustain, and sometimes destroy. I like the idea of using characters that aren’t biologically human but have distinct and sincere humanity. I want to present characters that don’t or couldn’t exist, yet seem strangely familiar—and in that respect make their relatability universal.

All of my stories generate from personal experience. I owe much to my close friends for shaping who I am and influencing the kind of stories I want to tell. At the heart of all my work is a story of how friendships change and evolve through triumphs, failures, and the realities of age.
